Take Care, Austin, TX Circa 2006

I had breakfast this morning with a former co-worker; I relish any chance to talk shop. We tackled the evolution of the tech industry and the ambiguity and strain it creates. Every time I have this conversation I always return to the same thought. “I could be an accountant or push paper somewhere and never deal with massive flux or uncertainty. But I would hate it.” I would be bored out of my skin.

Almost every client project I’ve worked on is plagued with problems; no time, scope creep, communication woes, design and business strategy misalignments. Some can be fixed and others require compromise. We, designers and developers are often asked to do near impossible things, so we stay up until 3am and our tired eyes steady to reach the goal. The beauty is in the struggle and we are athletes.
I can’t think of any other job that would require me to be a scientist, an architect, cognitive psychologist, mad hatter, magician and a gypsy with a crystal ball. It gets me out of bed each morning with the same passion as the day before. With that I leave you with an Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, quote.

Pinky: Gee, Brain. What are we going to do tonight?

The Brain: The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world.
