What city was this picture taken?
Make no mistake Austin’s dev/designer community is engaged, smart and stronger than ever. The best place to evidence this is at Refresh Austin’s monthly meetup at Buffalo Billiards, downtown on 6th Street. The well appointed, constantly updated site has group discussions, a job board and their own Flickr pool and Twitter feed. At the helm to MC and help manage the listserv is Alex Jones, one of Austin’s main connectors in the developer/design space.
Last night I gave a design talk at the well attended monthly Austin Refresh meeting.
I focused ont getting through this year by experimenting with your unique design process, trying new methods, tools and making yourself uncomfortable (by taking yourself out of your comfort zone in order to grow) to gain new perspective. “Design process can be dogmatic, I grant everyone in this room PERMISSION to tap into your own creativity.” Followed with the sentiment that no child says they cannot draw, so let’s get back to that mindset. I touched on serendipity, generosity, good intentions and kindness to get through tough times.
I offered my perspective on change, “We may not be able to change our jobs, where we live, what car we drive this year, but this FREES us to do something great for others.” I encouraged everyone in the room to reach out, and take advantage of the great dev/designer community we have. “People in the Austin community, in this room, want to help, don’t forget that.”
Full presentation to be posted here in the coming days.
